Minocycline

Possible Side Effects

All medications may have side effects. For your own safety, it is recommended that you read the "Patient Information" section of the package insert whenever starting a new medication.

Minocycline is an antibiotic in the tetracycline family. It is commonly used to treat dermatologic problems. Most people will not experience any significant adverse effects while taking this medication. However, some of the possible side effects are discussed below.

Minor side effects may include stomach upset, headache, dizziness and rarely bluish-black discoloration within acne scars, inside the mouth or on the lower legs. Do not take medication 30 minutes before lying down to avoid heartburn. Take medication with a full glass of water. Taking medications in the evening at least an hour before bedtime will be helpful to avoid dizziness which the body generally adapts to after 10-14 days.

Minocycline can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. When out in direct sunlight wear a SPF 30 sunscreen or sunblock which is non-comedogenic.

For female patients minocycline may make you more prone to a vaginal yeast infection. Eating daily amounts of live cultured yogurt may help to prevent this if you are prone to yeast infections. If you plan to become pregnant, please stop this medication.

There have also been very rare reports of more serious conditions associated with minocycline. Reversal of these conditions is dependent on stopping the medication. If you experience fever, joint pain, rash, yellow skin, chest pain, persistent headache, blurred vision or other unexplained symptoms of illness while taking minocycline, please stop the medication and call the prescribing doctor promptly.

Thank you for taking time to read this. Your health is our primary concern.
