Pre-operative Instructions for Dermatology Surgery
Your physician requests your assistance to ensure your safety during the dermatology surgery, which you and your physician have scheduled. Please take note of the following instructions:
1. Notify your doctor today of any medical medications prescribed for you or any medical diagnosis of which you are aware. Remind your doctor of the diagnosis and medications on the day of your surgery.
2. DO NOT TAKE medications containing ASPRIN (example: Anacin, bufferin, or Ecotrin) or IBUPROPHEN (example: Motrin or Advil) for the WEEK BEFORE YOUR SURGERY. These medications increase the risk of your bleeding during your surgery. Acetaminophen or Tylenol can be taken safely for minor discomfort without increasing the risk of bleeding. Please also stop taking any vitamin supplements, which contain Vitamin E as they can also increase bleeding.
3. Notify your doctor immediately if you are taking any medications to decrease the clotting time of your blood. Persatin (dipyridamole), Coumadin and Aspirin are used by doctors for this purpose.
4. Notify your doctor today if you have heart diseases, or heart valve problems, which require antibiotic therapy before surgery.
5. Have a light meal before surgery.
6. Dermatology surgery is done under local anesthesia. Most patients feel comfortable driving after the surgery. If it is convenient, please bring a companion with you on the day of your surgery to assist you and drive you after your surgery.
7. Your activities may be restricted for up to two weeks after surgery. Discuss with your doctor any questions you may have regarding this prior to your surgery.
8. Do not plan to travel for two weeks after surgery.
