Total knee replacement (TKR) can relieve pain and disability for patients suffering from arthritis. Often patients may get relief from exercise, weight loss, use of a brace or cane, chlondrotin sulfate and glucosamine, Tylenol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, viscosupplementation or steroid injection. At the point when these treatments are not appropriate or are ineffective, total knee replacement – resurfacing the rough knee with metal and plastic - has a high chance of providing long term relief.

An Innovative Approach

A new technique which has been in use for over three years utilizes smaller instruments and the same clinically proven implants used in traditional surgery. Referred to as 'less invasive' this technique provides the potential for an easier recovery.

Benefits of Tissue Sparing Surgery

  • Shorter healing time
  • Increased mobility
  • Less scarring
  • Decreased pain
  • Decreased need for physical therapy
Smaller incisions and tissue sparing techniques limit dissection of the quadriceps minimizing post operative pain and speeding recovery. New tools allow for less cutting and less damage to the soft tissues. Computer navigation guides the bone cuts and increases the precision of the implant placement. By avoiding intra-medullary instrumentation of the femoral canal (we do not push the bone marrow out into the circulating blood) patients have fewer breathing problems and less confusion post operatively.
