June 2008

Survivorship Day Celebration

On Saturday, June 21, from 2 to 5 p.m., the community is invited to join in a free celebration of cancer survivorship at PAMF's Mountain View Center, located at 701 E. El Camino Real in Mountain View.

Jerry Padavano, author of "The Ultimate Challenge: Surviving Cancer," will kick off the day’s event and stay to sign books.

Cancer survivors, as well as representatives from the American Cancer Society, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, PAMF's Cancer Care Clinic, an oncological dietician and Palo Alto's Breast Cancer Connections organization will be at the event answering questions, staffing booths and handing out educational materials.

Adding to the celebratory tone of the day will be an ice cream social, live music, "Exercise for Energy" movement therapy demonstrations, free photographs and face painting.

PAMF's Survivorship Care Program

In 2006, PAMF's Patient-Focused Cancer Care Committee began to develop standards of care to support patients while they are transitioning into normal life. The survivorship plan includes psychosocial support (trained volunteers and support groups), shared decision making, nutrition support, a pain management plan and charitable care.

Visit the new PAMF Cancer Care Services Web site for more details on our Survivorship Program.

CarePages

By the end of June, CarePages, a free online service that allows patients to send updates to friends and families about their cancer treatment, will be available to patients via the new PAMF Cancer Care Services Web site. Through CarePages, patients create and post journal updates about their progress, which alleviates the need for frequent phone calls to friends and family. They can also upload and share photos, receive supportive messages and ask for advice on discussion boards.

Millions of people use CarePages to find support during life-changing illnesses such as cancer treatment, chronic illness, stroke, hospitalization and other conditions and situations. Now, PAMF patients are also offered easy access to this program.
