The philosophy of the Nutrition Services Department is to provide up-to-date medical nutrition therapy (nutrition assessment and careplan development) for those disease processes affected by nutrition. Catching chronic diseases early with medical nutrition therapy can prevent unnecessary medical consequences that can lead to physical, financial and emotional debilitation of patients.

The department provides patients with a combination of services, including one-on-one counseling, group classes, and a library of resource materials. Up-to-date information, translation of complex physiological and nutrition processes into everyday language, and individualization of care is the cornerstone of effective nutrition therapy education provided by the Nutrition Services Department at CMG. Appropriate food choices and physical activity will help patients lead long, healthy productive lives.

The goal of the department is to provide medical nutrition therapy for the many complex disease processes, including cardiovascular diseases and GI diseases as well as diabetes self-management training for patients with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Most patients are referred by Camino Medical Group physicians but the department does take outside referrals as well.

The demand for diabetes self-management training and medical nutrition therapy has significantly increased at CMG during the last few years, resulting in an increase in staff, appointment times and classes. Annually, Nutrition Services provides more than 5000 patient visits.

Nutrition services are by referral only.
